Dog Fouling - Message from the Police

West Somerset Police in partnership with Timberscombe Neighbourhood Watch, West Somerset Council and Exmoor National Park, have teamed up with the children of Timberscombe C of E School to tackle the very unpleasant problem of dog fouling in the village. This follows complaints from members of the community and the school. The pupils have created some posters which will be displayed around the village reminding dog walkers to clean up after their dogs. Failure to comply could lead to a fine, but even worse, there are serious health implications.
Dog waste can contain millions of bacteria, which can cause:
cramps,
diarrhoea,
intestinal illness,
and serious kidney disorders in humans.
To prevent the spread of the infection, dog-owners should always dispose of dog faeces in a responsible way.
Peter Hughes, Community Safety Officer for West Somerset Council said, "Dog mess and the failure of dog owners to clean up after their animals is an issue that the vast majority of the public view as anti-social. This poster campaign makes it very plain that the young people of Timberscombe will not tolerate it. Well done to them."

Timberscombe Calendar 2010

Gabrielle Horrobin and Mary Holcombe have been instrumental in producing a Timberscombe calendar for 2010. Timberscombe Show

Although Timberscombe Show 2009 was a great success, one area where there was room for a lot more entries was in the wine classes. There have not been many entries since the first year wine was included. Our excellent judge has come up with a suggestion; she has supplied a simple recipe for 'Grapple wine' to be included in next year's show. If there was enough interest, perhaps the ingredients could be bought centrally and shared out, rather than new wine makers having too great an expense.
Anyone who is interested in taking part in this experiment and needs ingredients, please let me know. Wendy Cook Phone 8412471

3. Animal Antics ( with caption )
4. Transport
5. Our village (enlargement )

Garden Party at Slade farm, Timberscombe 25th July at 2.30pm

Mr and Mrs Roberts have kindly invited us to hold our annual cream tea event at Slade Farm. Many of you might wonder where Slade Farm is, but if you follow the road to Wheddon Cross and turn off at the Oaktrow Farm turning just before Sully Corner, it is about a mile up, at the end of the drive. It will be well signposted on the day.
The venue supports wonderful mature gardens and extensive views. Mr and Mrs Roberts have designed and cultivated these gardens from scratch over the time that they have been resident at Slade Farm and the result is a wonderful mix of shrubs and garden plants. There will be a number of stalls for the purchase of plants , cakes, etc. and teas will be served in the garden.
For those villagers without transport, we hope to be running a car service from the square on the day. Full details of this will be posted later.

This is hardly surprising as the band has been together for 50 years, performing at countless locations throughout the South - West. Jazz enthusiasts may well have enjoyed many of their highly entertaining concerts. The band was formed in 1959 by a group of musicians who lived in the area of the Tone Valley around Taunton. Their music has always been aimed at the general public, with easy to listen to melodies known by everyone. This accounts for the group’s longstanding popularity.People in the Minehead area will have another opportunity to enjoy the band’s unique style on Sat 4th July when they perform in the beautiful setting of Wanneroo Farm, Timberscombe ( on the A396). Gates are open from 6pm. Refreshments and bar will be available. If wet the event will be held in the new stable block. Orchards Social Club Fete

Last year we held a very succesful fete but this year we hope to be a little more adventurous by adding a carnival theme to it. Exmoor National park are already on board and are preparing to use the hill fort for a Roman re-enactment. They will also be bringing Clicket to the forefront for what should be a very enjoyable day.
Those of you who have lived in Timberscombe for many years will remember that Timberscombe used to hold a carnival. This tradition has been lost but there is no reason why we can't bring it back if the people of Timberscombe and the surrounding area want to. I would like people of like minds and people who run their own businesses to meet up to discuss this further. If you are interested please contact me , John, on 01643 841778 or e mail on goodajo@aol.com as soon as possible so that I can arrange a meeting. Please give it some thought and let Timberscombe enjoy some of the past traditions once again. I know we can do it. Please note, I am not asking for financial help just a little of your time.
Regards and take care, John Goodall

Playgroup rated GOOD by OFSTED

Timberscombe Turtles Pre-School has been officially rated as “good” following a recent OFSTED inspection. The Playgroup operates from Timberscombe Village Hall and also makes good use of the playground and swimming pool of the adjacent Timberscombe First School, also rated “good” by OFSTED. The links between the First School and the Playgroup are very strong, enabling children to transfer smoothly and naturally at the appropriate time.
A new committee took over the management of the playgroup in January and a new supervisor was appointed in February. The report acknowledged the quality of management and teaching, stating that, “the group as a whole are totally committed to improving the outcome for children and have a clear vision of how this will be achieved.”
The full OFSTED report is available at the setting and on line at http://www.ofsted.gov.uk/
At present the Playschool is open on Monday and Friday mornings 9-12 but additional sessions would be available to meet demand. If you have a child between the age of 2-4 years, you are very welcome to come along to see the group “in action”. You may arrange a visit by telephoning the secretary, Charmain Dascombe on 01643 841670.
